Goodbye, stuffy gym! Bye-bye overheated swimming pool! Now in late summer and autumn is the perfect time to move your exercise program outdoors. The benefits are obvious: On the one hand, you get a large dose of light and air - urgently needed if your daily routine mostly takes place indoors. On the other hand, exercising outside is simply more fun. It wonderfully clears your head! The prospect of outdoor exercise even motivates the biggest couch potatoes.
We clarify why exercise is so good for your body and how you can enhance the positive effects by drinking properly.
This happens in your body when you exercise:
-
Your heart beats faster, which trains the heart muscle.
-
All tissues and organs are better supplied with blood, as a result, the body is better supplied with oxygen.
-
The circulation gets going properly. The blood vessels can regulate themselves better.
-
The metabolism in the bones increases. This makes them denser and more stable.
-
The body cleanses itself: Unusable or toxic substances are excreted through sweat.
-
You produce more high-density lipoprotein (HDL). This protein moves excess cholesterol from the arteries to the liver, reducing the risk of stroke.
-
Exercising in the fresh air also has a positive effect on your vitamin D level. Vitamin D boosts the immune system and your energy levels.
Drinking properly during exercise – here's how:
It's common knowledge: If you sweat a lot, you need to drink a lot. But when is the right time to do so? And what drinks are suitable for outdoor athletes? Generally speaking: A lack of fluids lowers your physical and mental performance. Your legs become heavy, and everything feels much, much harder. The body tries to dissipate its excess heat through sweat. However, if the water stores are empty, it leads to overheating. This happens with a water loss of just 2% of your body weight (1.4 liters at a weight of 70 kg). So you see: Proper hydration is extremely important for athletes, especially in the warm season. It ensures that you remain efficient even under stress.
What you should pay attention to:
In warm temperatures, the body uses more water. Therefore, always plan an extra portion of fluids for outdoor sports in the summer.
-
Drink enough before exercise so that you are well hydrated when you start your session.
-
Drink as soon as you feel thirsty. If you know that you have a rather weak sense of thirst, let an app remind you at regular intervals.
-
Don't drink more than you lose through exercise. A "water belly" not only hinders your movement but can also lead to critical sodium deficiency.
-
Drink mineral-rich mineral water pure or mixed with fruit juices. If you sweat a lot, you can add a little table salt (sodium) to your drinks.
-
Beware: Drinking quickly, especially ice-cold drinks, can cause stomach and intestinal discomfort. It's better to drink small sips at a moderate temperature.
