The Nambeeta School

Die Nambeeta Schule

“I don't do social constructions, I do social constructing – and that doesn't go step by step.” Teacher Alvin – Nambeeta

The FLSK Future Fund supports the Nambeeta School in Uganda, where  In addition to reading, writing and arithmetic, the children also learn art, theater and dance! Find out more about the creative school project and what it means for the children.

My child should go to school

The community of Nambeeta, about 50 kilometers from the capital Kampala: Small fields where corn or beans grow, self-built huts made of clay or bricks with thatched roofs, a few cattle and pigs. What initially sounds like a rural idyll usually means a hard everyday life and very low incomes for the people. In this region, most families live as small farmers. They cultivate their own land, which yields just enough to feed them. Attending school is often not financially possible - especially if the school is far away. The children of these families often receive no education and little opportunity to develop their talents.

That is why committed parents founded the Nambeeta School in 2005. They provided the land on which they then built the school buildings and planted a garden themselves with the support of the GLS Zukunftsstiftung Entwicklung. In this way, they want to open up new perspectives for their children.

First lesson: Theatre acting

The Nambeeta School for almost 200 children is something very special :

  • Instead of using money as usual, parents can also use food donations or work to cover school fees when there is a shortage.

  • There is also a sponsorship program from the GLS Zukunftsstiftung Entwicklung for those families who need additional support.

  • In addition to the usual subjects, the children also learn art,

Horticulture/organic farming, handicrafts, and theater and dance.

The children especially love singing, painting, dancing and acting. Of course, they simply have a lot of fun. At the same time, through creative education, they also learn important skills that will give them an advantage later in life.

Dancing and singing to more self-confidence and a sense of community

Through dancing, the children at Nambeeta improve their motor skills such as balance, coordination and spatial awareness. Regular dancing also helps them stay fit, strengthen muscles and improve endurance.

Music also helps children to learn to speak better. Music helps them to hear better and to recognize where there is a pattern and where there is a rhythm. This also helps them to understand better how sentences are constructed and how to use new words.

Dance, theater, music and art also offer them a way to express feelings such as joy, sadness, anger or excitement. This strengthens their self-confidence and self-esteem. The children learn to work together, to respect others and to pull together.

Funded by FLSK Future Fund

Of course, none of this is possible without money. A dance performance and a theater evening require not only dedication and enthusiasm, but also the right equipment. FLSK has therefore donated money specifically for costumes and props. It looks really great, doesn't it?
